Winter is back! With more snow in the forecast, and the temperatures dipping below zero, it’s time to get out there and enjoy it! Check out these 5 outdoor events happening this Family Day Weekend.
1. Tales By A Winter’s Fire at Mountsberg
This event takes place Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the Family Day Weekend from 10-4.
Mountsberg Conservation Area has something for everyone this Family Day. Take in a puppet show, watch a raptor presentation, feed the bison and visit the snakes. Perhaps enjoy a few runs down the toboggan hill, or explore 14 kilometers of ski trails before partaking in a magical horse-drawn sleigh ride, ending the day with hot chocolate and story-time by the fire. I think that sums up a quintessential winter-wonderland day!
2. Bronte Creek Provincial Park
Have you always wanted to skate on an Olympic-size outdoor rink? Family Day is your last day to try it out at Bronte Creek this year. Skates, helmets and skate aids are available to rent. Or bring your sled and cross country skis and enjoy the snow!
Warm up indoors at The Nature Centre and check out live animal displays as well as nature and heritage crafts. Or head to the play barn and farm animals – always a hit with the kids!
3. Join the Owl Prowl at Pinery Provincial Park
Join the prowl and learn about the owls of Pinery on Saturday! This event takes place at 6:30 pm at the Visitors Centre. An indoor slideshow will be followed by a nocturnal walk along Cedar Trail. On Monday at 1 pm join a naturalist by the outdoor fire at the chalet to learn about animal tracking in the snow. Other activities throughout the weekend include guided bird walks and nature crafts.
Throughout the weekend, enjoy all Pinery has to offer. With 38 kilometers of ski trails, a skating rink, toboggan hill and ski and snowshoes available to rent – Pinery has winter fun covered!
4. Free Family Events at Rockwood
Entrance and all activities will be free! Donations to Grand River Conservation Foundation appreciated.
Enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, skating, snowshoeing trails, a campfire and fire trucks. Hot chocolate and food will be available to buy. This sounds like such a fun day in a beautiful setting. Rockwood is one of our favourite parks and I’m excited to finally visit it in winter!
5. Winterfest at Sandbanks Provincial Park
Organized by The Friends of Sandbanks, Family Day at the Maple Rest Heritage House on County Road 12 sounds like a lot of fun! Bring your skis, snowshoes and toboggans to join in the winter fun, then warm up by the bonfire or head indoors for some chili, hot chocolate and music with Mark Despault and Friends. Enjoy the show, or bring an instrument and join in the fun!
This event is sure to be a blast! I am too far away to attend this year’s event, but I might make this a destination next year!
With this winter being so unseasonably warm and snow-free in many parts of Ontario, it would be wise to check ice and snow conditions before heading out! Some events may be cancelled if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate!
